FEBRUARY 2016 Shooting new material this month for the Dragon LNG main induction programme and the re-make of the Permit  Authority programme. We are also re-editing thetwo Dragon Darwin programmes to reflect changes in management at both Dragon and Darwin..

Changes in Management structure has resulted in several of the Dragon LNG training and promotional programmes having to be re-edited and new video material shot. The National Trust charity has engaged ENIGMA VIDEO to produce a 2 minute Christmas promotional film featuring the Gothic Victorian house Tyntesfield in Wraxall, Bristol.

The complex brief included choreographing the movements of a dozen 'Victorian' performers in a 2 minute single take with the camera moving through several rooms.

Director Sally Doran's concept was to have the action slowed down to give a gracefull flow to the finished piece. This meant completing each take in one minute so that playback would last two minute. Director of photography and Steadicam operator Joshua Richards' skills have produced a stunning result which the National Trust is very pleased with and has resulted in over 20,000 views on the Tyntesfield web site.

View the trailer here by scrolling down on the Tyntesfield website: https://www.facebook.com/TyntesfieldNT/?fref=ts

What do you talk about when you meet someone who has climbed Everest, paraglided from the top of Mont Blanc and is planning to do the same from the top of Kilimanjaro?
Cameras of course! And the GoPro Hero3 action camera in particular.
Squash Falconer, adventurer, fund raiser and TV presenter has three which she uses extensively for her programmes and she kindly walked me through the set up and use of the camera when we met recently in Symonds Yat.
Thanks Squash, mine is on order!

MARCH 2013

A day at Pembrokeshire College for the next Dragon LNG Darwin programme. MARCH 2013

First try out for the Nikon D7000 DSLR as a movie camera was in Dubai two weeks ago at a modern art exhibition in the Al Quoz district. First impressions of the handheld footage are good and for some applications where narrow depth of field is an advantage it comes into its own. Further tests will be carried out to assess its potential as a production tool.

Work continued this month on the third Darwin Experience programme for Dragon LNG with a day on the beach at Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire. This south-westerly facing stretch of coast is particularly prone to sea-born litter and it is this "strand line" - the area above the high-tide line where the litter is stranded by the receding tide, that the pupils of Stackpole and Angle schools were here to study. Helping them make sense of the huge amount of rubbish collected were Martin and Sam from the Darwin Centre and Local MP Simon Hart here on the left of the picture.

Our third film for the Dragon LNG Darwin Experience is focused on marine biology and the diverse nature of the species that share our coastal waters with us. Pupils from nearby Tenby Junior School joined the team from the Darwin Centre on the rocky foreshore at Lydstep Haven for a morning of rock-pooling.

Work has just begun on a new Jetty Visitors Induction programme for Murco Petroleum at Milford Haven.

The new programme will supplement the existing series of induction programmes and is aimed at visitors to the refinery jetty who will not be engaged in any work on the berths. Additions and changes to the main refinery induction programme will also be carried out at this time.

MURCO MILFORD HAVEN REFINERY coducted an emergency exersize this month as part of its legal requirement under the Governments COMAH regulations.

In high winds and heavy rain, ENIGMA VIDEO covered the onsite turnout and reaction to the incident and the Emergency Control Room response. Two camera teams were used and the final debriefing was also filmed and will be included in the final edit..

Shooting for the third Dragon LNG Darwin Experience programme started this week with a field trip to an SSSI - a Site of Special Scientific Interest - at Porthclais in Pembrokeshire.

Geologist and writer Sid Howells was leader of the field trip for schoolchildren from nearby Haverfordwest VC School.

Difficult access to this sensitive site discouraged the use of bullky video equipment, so it was an ideal opportunity to give our new lightweight Panasonic camera an outing.

SVITZER MARINE'S safety training programme "Do It Safely Or Not At All"  is complete and awaiting final approval. Hard copies will be used at the company's training centre in Pembroke Dock and a streaming version will be available to access from the company's server.

For the next programme in Dragon LNG's Darwin Experience series, ENIGMA VIDEO will be filming a field trip to Porthclais on Pembrokeshire's north coast. This Site of Special Scientific Interest  reveals millions of years of geological history in its tumbling layers of ancient rock.

A recent rece to the area with Darwin's Marten Lewis (left) was very productive.

We discovered access to the site is not easy so we will be using the recently released Panasonic AG-HPX250 light weight camera instead of our larger broadcast camera  for this shoot.

Changes and additions to the Svitzer line-boat training video has resulted in more footage of the Svitzer safety and rescue RIB being needed. The RIB Storm, seen here, is one of three fast response boats berthed in the Port of Pembroke and is used regularly as a safety stand-by boat for all the major users of the haven.

The SVITZER Marine Services line boat training programme is nearing completion. Bad weather `and shipping schedules have conspired to cause delays in acquiring the footage needed to complete the project. At the Murco jetty this week we were able to get the final sequences we needed and the edit is now under way.

Enigma have carried out a series of interviews with teachers, head teachers and the county's Director of Education this week for inclusion in the two Dragon/Darwin programmes which will be presented at the end of October at The Science Learning Centre , University of London.

Dragon LNG's jetty training programme is now in the final edit after some extra control room and jetty pick-ups were shot this week.

The shooting for the second of the two short programmes For Dragon LNG has been completed with a trip to Carew Mill in South Pembrokeshire. The ancient tidal mill is owned and administered by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Estates Office and we gratefully ackowledge their assistance in making the programme possible.

Children from Manorbier VC Primary School were given an exciting conducted tour of the mill and its workings by Darwin Centre Manager Marten C Lewis (on the right in the picture).

Says Marten "Alternative energy may sound like a new idea, but using water power, like here at Carew to grind corn to make flour for bread, is thousands of years old".

THE DARWIN CENTRE has been providing hands-on experience to school children in Pembrokeshire for over six years. The charity's work is focused on raising awareness of and interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and has been partly funded by local energy company Dragon LNG.

ENIGMA VIDEO is producing two short promotional video programmes for Dragon to illustrate how the funding has enabled the charity to develop and grow over the years into a sustainable and highly valued teaching resource. Shooting began on a field trip to Newgale beach in Pembrokeshire where children from Broad Haven School were able to study the effects of changing conditions in the local environment.

Local training provider PROVIDENCE TRAINING are rolling out their new computer based training, skills and qualification verification service called QUALPASS.

Enigma Video have shot and edited a short presentaion that outlines its benefits to both employers and employees.

The programme will be used at exhibitions and training seminars and will also feature on the Qualpass website.

JUNE 2012

Filming has started on the new Line Boat Training programme for Svitzer Marine Services based in Pembroke Dock West Wales. Two days were spent on the marine jetties of the company's biggest clients on the Haven filming berthing services and one day at the company's base in the old Royal Dockyard. An Enigma Video film crew spent the afternoon aboard one of the new line boats filming crew duties and details of the mooring systems at each of the facilities the crews visit. More jetty filming is now needed to complete the shooting.

MAY 2012

DRAGON LNG, part of the British Gas Group received a cargo of liquified natural gas in May and ENIGMA VIDEO provided video crews to cover the berthing, offloading and disconnecting operations both on the berth and on the tankship itself.

Because of the highly volatile nature of the cargo and because of the very stringent safety precautions surrounding the offloading procedure, ENIGMA was required to use an intrinsically safe video camera certified to Ex Zone1 specification once the boat was tied up.

The X-CORDER EX4000 from Pixavi (left in the picture with camera operator Joshua Richards) was provided by Dragon LNG for our use during the offloading process and we hope to report on the camera' s performance in an upcoming issue of IOV FOCUS magazine.

MAY 2012

SVITZER MARINE have commissioned ENIGMA VIDEO to make a short documentary about the multinational's activities on the Milford Haven waterway. The video will be shown to school parties that visit the company's Pembroke facility as part of their marine and environmental studies projects.

MAY 2012

Work has just begun on a skills training video programme  for berth operators at DRAGON LNG's marine terminal. The programme is part of Dragon's ongoing commitment to health and safety at the busy port of Milford Haven and is to ensure that all operation's personnel receive the same high level of training.

MAY 2012

As part of the MURCO Refinery's Emergency Public Information Initiative, a freephone telephone line has been set up to give information and advice to the local community in the event of the refinery's alarms being sounded. ENIGMA VIDEO has recorded the message in both Welsh and English and provided copies for intranet, telephone and CD use.

APRIL 2012

DRAGON LNG of Waterston Milford Haven have been involved for some time in supporting and raising awareness of STEM subjects in schools throughout the county.  Investment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths programmes has been part of Dragon's Social Investment project since 2006 when the Dragon LNG Darwin Experience began. To take this message to the wider community, Dragon have commissioned two short presentations from ENIGNA VIDEO which were filmed on site and issued as webready files for the company's intranet and DVD copies for wider distribution.

MURCO Milford Haven asked ENIGMA VIDEO to produce a re-edited version of the refinery's Visitor Induction DVD programme. Changes to environmental, security and emergency procedures have been incorporated into the new edition and copies have been distributed to the security department and made available on the refinery's intranet.

Filming and editing for the new VALERO REFINERY induction programme has now been completed and the DVDs delivered.

We were fortunate to have the assistance of Chris Hood (third from the left) on this shoot. Chris is a graduate in Film & Video Production from the University of  Glamorgan and is freelancing with Enigma Video until he can find a permanent position. Chris Wigginton, Valero's Security advisor and Steve Williams the company's Safety Advisor are on the left and right of the photograph.

SVITZER MARINE LTD based at Pembroke Dock in west Wales has engaged ENIGMA VIDEO to produce a 20 minute training programme on DVD for staff working on jetties on Milford Haven. Svitzer's clients for their line boat, waste management and jetty operations services include all the major operators in the port and the video programme will be used to suplement and enhance Svitzer's very successful global safety training programme.

Final script review is under way and it is hoped to start filming on the Murco jetty in January 2012.

DRAGON LNG, part of British Gas is taking part in the group's Global Safety Week, which through a series of seminars at the Waterston facility encourages everyone on site to take responsibility for their own and their workmate's safety.

ENIGMA VIDEO is recording these sessions and a short edited DVD programme will be produced as part of the facility's feedback response to the parent company.

November 2011

The REGENT OIL REFINERY at Pembroke was originally built in 1963. It has subsequently been owned by TEXACO then CHEVRON and is now owned and managed by US based VALERO OIL.

In 2005 ENIGMA VIDEO made a series of short documentaries for TEXACO to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the plant's opening and which were shown at a celebration ball for employees and contractors at Folly Farm in Pembrokeshire. Copies of these films which borrowed heavily from 16mm colour films shot during the construction period have recently been requested by new owner VALERO and have now been delivered for dispatch to the United States.

The VALERO REFINERY at Pembroke is updating its main refinery inducion programme again and ENIGMA VIDEO have been on site filming new footage to replace sections where either company policy or safety regulations have changed recently. Many otherwise acceptable shots have had to be replaced because the recent change of ownership - from Chevron to Valero - has to be reflected in the corporate identity of the film. A visitor Induction and an Alkylation unit training programme are currently under discussion.

MURCO REFINERY MILFORD HAVEN have asked ENIGMA VIDEO to update the refinery's main induction programme again and a crew of two have been on site for several days filming new footage to cover changes in the plant's safety and environmental policy. Camera operator Joshua Richards and Murco's newly appointed Safety Advisor Diane Rees are seen here on the Murco rail loading stand during filming.

August 2011

VALERO OIL CORPORATION may not be familiar to the average UK motorist but having recently taken over the assets of Chevron UK LTD including its refinery at Pembroke, it is set to become one of the biggest European players in the energy market.

With new owners come new new managers and as the refinery's safety induction video has traditionally been headed up by a personal message from the manager, ENIGMA VIDEO has been on site to film a new introduction for the programme. Re-making the programme to reflect VALERO's corporate image is currently at the script stage and work will start this Autumn.

August 2011

MURPHY OIL CORP'S Milford Haven refinery has regular briefings to keep staff informed about developements at the facility. With such a large workforce - many of them shift workers, it is not always possible to be sure everyone is getting the same message. The latest initiative is to film the briefings and to release an edited version on the company's intranet. ENIGMA VIDEO provided production and editing services to the refinery as part of our ongoing commitment as a preferred contractor.

July 2011

DRAGON LNG at Milford Haven is preparing for its first scheduled maintenance shutdown since it came on line in 2009. The ENIGMA VIDEO produced main induction programme will form the core of the safety induction process for the hundreds of contractors that will be on site during this major turnaround.

To ensure that the Dragon corporate safety message gets across, ENIGMA VIDEO has filmed the plant's General Manager's pre shutdown safety briefing and delivered this on DVD which will be played immediately after the site induction programme. In this way, everybody will get the same safety message.

June 2011

ENIGMA VIDEO filmed two events in June. Both involved classic vehicles in South Wales and were organised by The Transport Festival of Wales. The first was a cavalcade of vintage and classic cars, commercial vehicles and buses on a coastal run from Bracelet Bay in Mumbles near Swansea to the foreshore car park in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire. The Under Milk Wood Run as it is known celebrates the great Welsh poet and writer Dylan Thomas's connection with both places and has become a very popular annual outing.

The second event, following on from the Under Milk Wood run was a static display of motoring nostalgia and memorabilia which filled a Park and Ride car park on the east side of Swansea with dozens of historic vehicles. An eclectic mix of cars, vans, lorries, buses, coaches and motor cycles kept a capacity crowd fascinated all day and the opening to the public of Swansea City Museum's vast stored collection in an adjoining warehouse, was an added bonus.

MAY 2011

CHEVRON REFINERY at Pembroke Dock has a new owner so the main contractor induction programme has to be updated to reflect not only the facility's new corporate identity but also changes in the company's health and safety policy. A review of the existing programme has been completed and new sections for the programme will be filmed and edited in the next few weeks. It is hoped to have the new induction programme ready to roll out as the new owner takes over in late Summer.

MAY 2011

Work has started on a short addition to the MURCO REFINERY's Main Contractor Induction programme. The refinery has just completed a major safety initiative that means that all process areas are now protected by fixed gas monitors. The film will explain how the system works and what response is required if the  alarms are activated.Training for the permanent and contract work force using the DVD and intranet presentation is to be completed before the end of May when the system goes live.

MAY 2011

Work is progressing on the third training programme for SEMLOGISTICS storage facility at Milford Haven. The programme is designed to give consistant training and instruction to contractors who provide the critical  safety observers or "Stand-by Men" where entry into confined spaces is required.

Filming was recently completed on and inside one of the giant out of service storage tanks on site and editing is now in progress.

The MURCO REFINERY at Milford Haven have just taken delivery of a short video programme on DVD and on CD made by ENIGMA VIDEO to remind staff and contractors of the recent changes to the emergency response procedures. The CD version will be distributed to safety representatives for showing during the "Tool Box Talks" that all departments regularly hold and will also be available on the facility's Health and Safety intranet page.

The DVD version will form part of the standard contractor and visitor induction programme..

The second of the three SEMLOGISTICS induction training programmes has now been completed and is awaiting approval before being released for use by the safety group..

The induction will play in the company's newly created training room and will also be available as part of their intranet training facility.

The final programme - training for safety observers, known as stand-by men, has been approved and the voice track recorded. It is hoped that filming will begin in mid-February

Editing is now underway on the second of three training programmes for SEMLOGISTICS storage facility at Waterston Milford Haven. This is a short induction programme that briefs visitors to the plant on the health and safety issues they are likely to encounter and the precautions they need to take whilst on site.

A third programme on skills training for safety observers is in the planning stage.

This year, 2010, Colin Riddle (left) celebrates forty years behind the lens. This has not been a continuous period of employment in film and video, quite the contrary. but there has seldom been a time when I was not involved in photography, still or moving, in some form or other.

The black and white picture (left) was taken in 1970 on the beach at Port Eynon, Gower when I was an unpaid assistant cameraman working with Bristol Film School on a graduate film. The camera is a mute Arriflex 16ST which was the standard workhorse 16mm silent camera of the day. The colour picture was taken this year, 40 years later with a similar Arri 16ST bought on ebay for my camera collection.Potential clients please note: we do not shoot 16mm any more!

SVITZER MARINE part of the world-wide Svitzer specialist marine services group with over 170 years of experience in harbour, coastal, terminal and offshore towage and salvage, has awarded the contract for Induction training programmes for mooring and line boat crews to ENIGMA VIDEO.

Svitzer already have a very impressive safety training system which includes a framework of regular training, monitoring and certification. The new induction training programme called DO IT SAFELY OR NOT AT ALL will add a detailed health and safety briefing that covers both local safety rules & waterway regulations plus the wider and most significant aspects of national health and safety law.

The production is currently at the script stage and it is hoped to start filming in January.

SOUTH HOOK LNG TERMINAL LIMITED, the largest  LNG re-gasification terminal in Europe, recently held a ceremony to formally name five Svitzer tugs and two line boats that will work the Milford Haven waterway and provide towing and berthing services for the terminal's fleet of double hulled LNG carriers. Our associates at Aurora Imaging provided stills facilities before, during and after the ceremony and now ENIGMA VIDEO has turned a selection of these photographs into a slideshow DVD for distribution to guests of the ceremony.

SemLogistics of Milford Haven have approved the first of three training programmes aimed at visitors and contractors to their 260 acre oil storage facility in Waterston. Filming for the first programme, a safety induction for contract workers was completed in three days on site despite changeable November weather, and the final edit completed with the enthusiastic cooperation of several SemLogistic staff members. A shorter visitor induction will begin editing soon and the third programme, training for safety observers, will follow. Enigma Video took advantage of the facilities available on site to get some unusual angles on the plant and were particularly fortunate to have the the use of a 100ft hydraulic platform for several days.

The FASCIAL EDGE tool is a new addition to manual medicine and is aimed at those involved in "bodywork" therapies. Designed and marketed by Andrew Glaister D.C. an accredited Chiropractor working in West Wales the Fascialedge tool is now expanding into world markets and it was felt that a short video on the Fascialedge website (www.fascialrelease.co.uk) would help to demonstrate the benefits of its use and also illustrate the techniques and skills of the tool in a practical way.
ENIGMA VIDEO completed shooting and editing the short presentation over two weeks in November and the programme has now been delivered and accepted by our client.

For the opening and closing sections of the new SemLogistics induction video, aerial shots of the facility, the Haven and the surrounding countryside were required by the client.

Having ruled out gyro-stabalised mounts on helicopters because of the high cost, ENIGMA VIDEO used a Cessna 172 light aircraft hired from the local flying club. Excellent footage was obtained despite poor weather conditions.

SEMLOGISTICS Britain's largest independent oil storage facility at Milford Haven have commissioned ENIGMA VIDEO to make three Training programmes.  A main contractor induction lasting 20 minutes, a 10 minute visitor induction and a training programme for Safety Observers.  The scripts have been completed and accepted and filming will start on site in the next two weeks.

JOSHUA RICHARDS, Enigma's freelance assistant cameraman, video editor and general techie is leaving for pastures new.  And who would blame him!  Joshua has been accepted at Ravensbourne Digital Media College and will be joining the first intake at the new purpose designed building near London's O2 dome in September for a three year course in Digital Video Production.  We have been very fortunate to have had Joshua on board for the last two years and he will be greatly missed.  He has contributed significantly to Enigma's creative output and we are sure that, given this new opportunity, he will continue to develop and expand his skills in the future. We wish him well.

JULY  2010

IDX TECHNOLOGIES of Langley, Slough, distributors of the Italian made EASY STEADY camera stabilisation system, recently loaned their Lite 'n Go broadcast rig to ENIGMA VIDEO for evaluation and review in an upcoming edition of the IOV FOCUS magazine Click here to view.

Stylish and lightweight compared to some other rigs and considerably cheaper than most, the system was put through its paces in several different real-life situations (including the ENIGMA Jeep, left) and acquitted itself well. We were particularly impressed with the build quality and the materials used.  In use the Easy Steady was quick and trouble free to set up and balance, precise and responsive in action and produced consistently smooth pictures. IDX are currently using the ENIGMA VIDEO test footage during their EASY STEADY training sessions. Click here to view.

CHEVRON PEMBROKE REFINERY have engaged ENIGMA VIDEO once more to produce a re-edited version of a training video last made two years ago. The programme informs contractors of the risk assessed procedures  that must be followed when making, breaking and blinding flanged pipe joints. These procedures are thought to have had a significant impact on the long term safe running of the refinery's process plants.

This will be the third programme made by ENIGMA for Chevron on this subject.

In this instance Enigma were able to offer CHEVRON an economic update path for the edited programme as all Chevron raw media is stored on dedicated drives and kept for at least two years, making changes to delivered programmes easily achievable at low cost.

MARCH 2010

WHESSOE ENGINEERING Ltd the builders of the two LNG storage tanks at Dragon LNG import terminal in Milford Haven  have commissioned a promotional DVD for distribution to prospective clients world-wide. Covering the whole of the four year building project, the video will deal with the complex engineering project from the construction and environmental impact angles.
